Reflection Questions

  1.  My favorite photo I took was the loop lighting. I like this the most because the coloring of the light and the overall quality is amazing compared to my other photos. I also think that my model was the perfect fit for the lighting and his position is off to the left side just a little bit, this combined with the cropping I did creates space and a interesting look.
  2. I feel like paramount is one of the better looking lighting techniques that I could use on a daily basis. This is because with the sun and most lighting being above peoples head its very easy to use this lighting to my advantage to make random snapshot photos look more like fine art. I also hope to better understand and apply how different light colors affect the quality and look of my portrait photos.

Movement At OP

Still photo of passing a soccer ball on the field Shutter-speed 1/500 sec, f/5.6, ISO-100

Kicking a soccer ball shot at 1/20 shutter-speed, f/22, ISO-100

Rainbow lights shot with bulb shutter setting, f/5.6, ISO-100

I would give advice to first have a tripod and make sure your camera doesn’t move much as this can create too much blur and ruin many photos. Another piece of advice I would give would be to take photos at the moment of important actions like the leg extending to kick a ball, or someone putting out their hands to catch a football, these actions are better at telling a story than just any random and less important actions.

Reflection Questions

I hope that my composite image portrays the many of the flaws with Hollywood, being an actor or celebrity, and just how society treats older people. The main problem I hope to portray is the terrible treatment actors receive where there is bad pay or working conditions. This makes actors age and look older, not only this but actors or anybody out of their prime or just a little too old are thrown away in terms of cultural relevance. Thus I chose my images to show how even old people in the world still hold a lot of value and importance. Whether the value comes from their personal stories of history or their contributions to society in inspiring youth and new generations, the impact of these people can’t be underestimated.

I would give advice to choose a fine art photo and a person of the same or extremely similar skin color. When I was making my Cretu I didn’t take this into account and I struggled to match the skin colors and even using saturation and other ways of coloring the skin was still not perfect. Outside of this I would advise you to choose a fine art painting where the faces can somewhat naturally match as I had a lot of struggles making the eyes, chin, and eyes of the faces to line up making my picture look weird and deformed.

Reflection Questions

  1. The distinct mood of my photos is a dark and mysterious mood where you don’t understand what is going on. This can be seen in my oil and water photo where the black and white stand out. There is also the contrast between the uniform circles and chaotic bubbles of oil that contribute to the mood of chaos and order spark emotions of intensity and confusion.
  2. The photo makes me think about biology. The movement and natural habitat of cells doing the things to keep you alive. The photo also makes me think about how particles move in air and how things flow in water and the chaotic aspect of that movement that is unpredictable.
  3. What jumps out at me is the oil circle in the middle that disrupts the flow of the food coloring. This circle in the center also feels untouchable like a one-way mirror or a magnifying glass. This magnifying aspect also enhances the contrast between the black water and white color moving throughout the photo.
  4. My oil and water photo makes me feel curious. It reminds me of cells and biology, one of my favorite subjects and thus sparks curiosity. On top of this the black and white in the photo makes you question what you are looking at as it’s almost impossible to tell that it’s just oil and water and has a somewhat magical or mysterious feeling.
  5. I would give the advice of doing the first thing that comes to your mind. This will allow you to take full advantage of the abstract art aspect as abstract art is something that is best done without thought. Another piece of advice I would give would be to keep trying many different angles, aspects, and materials in order to find a really good photo.
Crispy Triangles- Taken in my car while driving to school
Wounded Warrior- Taking before stairs in front of Degeta building
  1. The first photo, A wounded Warrior, had a very intentional food choice of fruit roll ups. I chose this to simulate the cloth used on injuries especially in war. But the, Crispy Triangles, photo wasn’t intentional and was ever Rome was eating at that moment, this adds to the realness and the emotion felt in his face.
  2. Both photos are taken during the day. I think this helps add a lot more to the contrast of color and white an black. As for the mood It was a challenge to darken the photo and thus the mood of my Wounded Warrior photo as I wanted a darker message being portrayed. As for Crispy Triangles the early morning light really helps convey a lighter and happier mood compared to my other photo.
  3. In my first photo I use the composition technique of filling the frame as Sam takes up most of the space drawing the focus to his face. In my second photo I chose diagonal lines as I wanted just a little angling in the photo to make it more unique. I also did this to help make the photo more focused on Rome eating instead of the interior of the car.
  4. The color and splash techniques in both my photos draw the eyes to the main subject, the food and its interaction with my subjects. For my first photo the coloring of the fruit roll up and the dark surroundings help to resemble the realistic aspect of war and a wounded warrior. As for my second photo, the color splash of the bag and the chip grab the viewer’s attention and are pleasing to the eye.
  5.  For my second photo I used fields of depth to blur the roads through the window this created a sense of movement in the photo. Another technique I used was Rule of Thirds for my second photo where Rome is on the third line which gives space to the rest of the photo. As for my first photo, focus is used to center the photo around Sam’s face and to unfocus his arms.
  6. I think some advice for future students is to think outside of the box on what you’re doing with the food or what position the person is in. Another tip is to always focus the camera on the face of the person. Finally when editing the photo make the person pop out you can do this via color splash and cropping.

Reflection Questions

I feel like I have strengths of getting good angles and being in the right place at the right time to get good photos. But where I think I lack is in variety and making good use of my time. But overall my strength outweigh the weakness I have making my photos look good.

Text photo shoot I will try to move faster to allow both me and my partner to get a good variety of quality photos. Another way I will try and improve is taking more photos that capture movement and flow. Similar to movement I also want to take greater advantage of depth of view and blur in my photos.

In the photo organic shape I hoped to convey many emotions and get the viewer to think about nature. I really wanted to convey the beauty of nature and the complex details o the sparrow a common bird and what the world might look like through its eyes.

I would like to further explore the organic shape element of art in future photograph shoots. This is because I love nature and biology. The organic shape allows me to photograph things like birds, rabbits, insects in attempt to capture the amazing chaos of nature.

I want to experiment with exposure time with will help with my desire to capture photos that show movement. Another thing I want to experiment with is lighting both inside and outside to highlight different aspects of my photos. Finally I want to experiment with the different settings on the camera and see how they affect my photos.

Surrounded by Bain

Beverly Rd

Sidewalk around Bain building

Path to Bleachers by the Bain building

What I really enjoyed about the very first photography adventure outside was the amount of freedom. I also enjoyed working with a classmate as we were able to bounce photo ideas off of each other. Finally I enjoyed the camera, which took such beautiful photos, and its ability to capture the world and what I was think in taking the photo.

The biggest challenge with the camera was getting it to focus and highlight the aspects of the image that I wanted it to. Another challenge was figuring out how to access images I just shot and turning on and off the flash. Another challenge of the DSLR camera was getting the right angle.

Next photo shoot I will try to go to different areas of the campus as this photo shoot the only place I went was around the Bain building. Another thing I hope to improve is the amount of photos I take and really try to make the best use of my time with the camera. The final thing I hope to improve on is my understanding of the functions of the camera.
